Meet Rohan! Rohan is one of our Youth Advisory Council (YAC) members. Rohan is currently in his final year of High School and the youngest member of Plan International Canada’s YAC. Rohan joined the YAC with a variety of leadership experiences in both his school and community, including President of his school’s DECA chapter which trains students in public speaking and business skills as well as the President of his riding’s Politics club, which encourages young men and women to be actively engaged in the political process and serves as a youth voice to the local Member of Parliament.
Check out Rohan’s blog about the YAC’s upcoming trip to the United Nations.
The United Nations:
The epitome of international development. A forum of discussion where diplomats of many nations can peacefully sit together as friends to achieve international co-operation in solving the economic, social, cultural, environmental issues plaguing the world today.
Youth are the future generation who will govern the world. We play an integral role in achieving such co-operation and the implementation of the resolutions made.
Former Secretary General Ban Ki Moon famously said:
“As torch bearers of the new development agenda, you have a critical role to play in ending poverty, inequality, hunger and environmental degradation. Your actions will be central in ushering in an era in which no one is left behind.”
From February 1st to 3rd I, along with 5 other members of Plan International Canada’s Youth Advisory Council will be attending The Youth Assembly at the United Nations in New York City where we will be learning how to implement the Sustainable Development Goals into the work we do with Plan International Canada.
Since 2004, The Youth Assembly at the UN has been equipping young leaders from over 100 countries around the world to be vehicles of change through workshops, activities and discussions. Over the years there have been a variety of key note speakers who have given in depth insight and been sources of inspiration for participants. These speakers include Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Laureate ever, and also former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
I think I speak for all the participants from Plan International Canada when I say that we are beyond excited for this opportunity, not only to represent this great organization but also our beautiful country of Canada.
We hope to come back with a network of young leaders from around the world, but also able to take this new acquired knowledge to mobilize youth in their involvement with the Sustainable Development Goals.
We will be on social media throughout the whole Youth Assembly! Follow @Plan4ChangeCAN to see what we are up to at the UN!
We will be back soon with a synopsis of the event upon our return, but for now we bid you adieu.
